Fulton Lights – “Old Testament Kind (Israel + Palestine)”
Excerpt from The Czech Republic

It is just a hallway that separates us from the criminals in the group, a hallway and a door. They have no idea we’re here, and we know not to go over there, though I imagine I’m not the only one who’s fascinated by them. It helps that none of their group has partners or ex-partners over here at the shelter. I understand from listening to their meetings that their women stayed with them after their crimes. I volunteered to work evenings in the daycare room; its thin dividing wall allows me to hear the meeting in full. I get angry when the children cry or make it hard for me to hear. Rose praised me for how quiet the playroom is when I’m in charge, but she doesn’t know that the children are all frightened of me and that that is the only way I know to keep it quiet.
