Destroyer’s “Streethawk” (& Thief & City of Daughters) Reissued

Destroyer Streethawk cover art

I’ve mentioned about a bazillion times how I spent a really exorbitant amount of cash on my copy of Destroyer’s Streethawk vinyl. I mention it again now only to point out that you don’t need to do the same as I did– Merge has just announced a vinyl reissue of this perfect-10-of-an-album, and it’s due out on 4/20. You can, and should, stream Streethawk, unquestionably one of my favorite records of all time, in its entirety at Merge.

MP3: Destroyer – “The Sublimation Hour”

They’re doing a CD reissue of the album too, along with CD reissues of 2 other early Destroyer classics, Thief and City of Daughters. Of course, if you want those of vinyl, you should definitely pick up the double-LP reissue containing both that Nominal out last year.

You Can’t Keep On Preaching

Quadron - “Buster Keaton” They used to call this sort of thing “sophisti-pop”, right? Immaculate, subtly synthetic versions of classic soul, with a bit of ironic distance contrasted with polite earnestness. “Buster Keaton” is a hard song to pin down — from moment to moment, the band is referring to totally different eras of R&B and pop, and though the basic structure and melody of the piece scans normally, it has an oddly vertiginous quality. I’m especially fond of the way the vocals and the horns in the chorus seem to swing like pendulums just out of synch with each other, though I could maybe do without the spoke “girl…” bit, though it is fairly cute.

Pre-order it from Amazon.

Every Breath is a Drag

Born Ruffians - “Sole Brother” My grandfather is a bit senile and will often call me up and just start singing. Huge long songs that have no discernible consistency, no melody that I can follow, the one thing they are for sure is impenetrable. He barely takes a breath, there's no room to speak on my end at all. So after a few minutes of singing, I will get bored, and either join in, or just talk over it, shout over it, anything to try and break through. He often just sings on oblivious, but one time I was shouting so loud and so boldly that he went quiet, a hush on the line. I paused, listened, nothing. So again I started screaming and he hung up.
